TMD and Headache

TMD and Headache

According to the recent researches  , that have concluded that "TMJ disorder can be caused by malocclusion, low vertical dimension, and misalignment of occlusal plane" over 90% of the cases.

Studies  illustrates that neck muscle contraction comprise about 90% of all headaches and the distraction of the occipital nerves, which originate from the back of the neck and spread to the head are the most common nerves to cause headaches.

In Dentistry, hundreds of articles have been published over the past 80 years; many explaining how headaches and neck pain can result from TMJ Disorders and what to do to alleviate/relieve chronic headaches and neck pain.

We move our jaw over 2000 times a day (and night). Every time we chew, talk, swallow or move our head, upper and lower teeth come together and brace the jaw against the skull. If someone has Dental Distress such as malocclusion (bad bite), multiple missing teeth, worn down teeth, deep bite, poor dental work or have physical functions such as habitual bad posture, major surgery, personal injury/accident etc., it can displace the TMJ from its balanced position and strain the nerves . When the nerves receive continuous stress beyond their adaptive capacity, it causes tension to the occipital nerves and causes headaches and migraine.

Know About TMJ / TMD

"T M J" stands for Temporo-mandibular-joint. 'TMD' simply means 'TMJ Disorder'.

The function of the TMJ is to hold the lower jaw to the head within a certain  boundary and guide the jaw movements for chewing, talking, singing, yawning,  breathing, swallowing, keeps airway open while sleeping, and maintains the body  posture and balance, etc.

All body joints (TMJ, hip, knee, wrist, ankle, finger etc.) have either hinge movement  or circular movement or a combination of the two.  However, TMJ has not only hinge  and circular movement, but also has a sliding movement: condyle (head of the jaw  bone) moves in and out of the joint socket: Ginglymoarthroidal (hinge-gliding) joint.

TMJ may be the most active part in our body next to the heart and lungs. An  average  person moves the TM joint 2,000-2,500 times a day/night. If someone likes  to talk  excessively or chew gum habitually, it may move 5,000 times or even 10,000  times a  day.

If this complex joint receives constant distress beyond the adaptive  capacity, the harmony of the system can be disturbed, TMJ and disc can become displaced, joint and disc can be damaged and clinical symptoms may be manifested to the jaw, face, head, neck, shoulder, back, and to the whole body through the musculo-skeletal-nervous system.

The TMJ is one of the most complex joints in the body. It is composed of a large group of delicate small muscles, nerves, blood vessels, ligaments, tendons,  cartilage, disc, synovial fluid, retro-discal tissue and each part work in harmony with other parts like a “ Symphony Orchestra”.
